Driving in the Snow
Before you attempt driving in snow make sure that all windows, mirrors and snow is removed from the top surfaces of your car. You could be stoppped and subject to a fine if is this is not done. See the Highway Code Rule 229. The reason is that falling snow from your car could cause an accident to following traffic.
Any changes to your steering, braking or acceleration needs to be done very gently and when the car is travelling in a straight line well before any bends. Although this may sound obvious, keep your speed down to suit the conditions even if you have four wheel drive – four wheel drive or ABS will not prevent you from being in an accident or being subject to the rules of physics. No technical aid or device can replace good driving.
Keep Space – snow or ice can increase your stopping distance by a factor of 10 – even if you have ABS.
Think Ahead – your ability to think well ahead and spot the problems will help you stay safe.
Food for thought……………
Carrying a set of snow chains – they are now very simple to fit and take little room in the boot.
Screen Wash – although you can buy a “winter” screen wash that helps prevent freezing try carrying a small spray bottle within the car filled with screen wash for that time when the nozzles freeze up on the bonett.
Is your journey worth it? – If so plan the route, prepare for the worst (hot drink, blanket fully charged mobile, shovel, torch etc).
