The AA has recorded the biggest jump in car insurance ever since the motoring group has tracked the market with young drivers bearing the bruntof he rise.
Figures due to be published this week show premiums for 17 to 22-year-olds have risen by 47% in a year.
Young male drivers are paying the most, with the average of the three cheapest quotes they get being £2,457.
That is nearly double the premiums offered to young women, the motoring group said.
So what can you do to help reduce the cost of insurance if you are a new driver? Firstly sign up for Pass Plus as many insurance companies give discounts for students who complete the course. Check with your insurance company to see what level of discount and shop around as the discounts can vary.
The Pass Plus course has a minimum of six one hour modules with no test- Success is determined by continued assessment by the instructor.
Module 1- serves two parts first the introduction explaining the course outline and content while checking the students driving licence etc. Attitude and Positive driving are the keys to Pass Plus.
Module 1 then moves on to Town Driving.
Module 2-All Weather Driving covers all aspects of the topic such as rain, sleet or snow, mist or fog and bright sunshine.
Module 3- Out of Town and Rural roads covers observation techniques, making safe progress and overtaking.
Module 4- Night Driving covers the importance of headlights and their use and upkeep. Adjusting to night driving and driving at dusk and dawn. Judging speed and distance and dealing with the dazzle of headlights. Parking at night is also covered.
Module 5- Dual Carriageways demand particular skills to be developed including effective observation and scanning. Judgement and planning at higher speeds with joining and leaving dual carriageways – use of slip roads and the correct use of speed.
Module 6- Motorways are not just the same as Motorways as they have higher traffic volumes, more traffic lanes and much faster traffic. Motorway rules are also different and need to be covered during the course. Including how to deal with problems such as breakdowns safely.
